Kids Company Achievement Awards transform Banqueting House
Event Concept were delighted to work with Kids Company on 23 July 2009 for their annual Achievement Awards which took place at the Banqueting House in Whitehall. This prestigious venue was transformed into an explosion of colour and creativity with an exhibition of the kids' artistic creations juxtaposed with a seamless awards set up, in preparation for the 300 kids and teenagers that attended.Charity group Kids Company provides educational and emotional support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Many of the children that Kidsco help have suffered from abuse and neglect, but with a walk-in centre and organised events throughout the year these kids are given new experiences and a safe place to go for advice, support and education.
Arriving at 6.30pm guests were directed into the Undercroft where an exhibition of the kids work had been set up, ranging from hand-crafted tapestries and sculptures to painted skulls and photographs. Event Concept's Production Designer, Ella Beese commented ‘We gave the Undercroft a cool glow of ice blue light to create atmosphere whilst also highlighting the artwork on display'.
The awards show kicked off at 7.30pm in the Main Hall where Event Concept had created slick twin projection screens fitted into two of the windows - ensuring a seamless look. The columns were uplit using Event Concept's in-house designed Concept 5 lights in pale lavender echoing the fuchsia stage, during the awards the wirelessly controlled LED lighting was programmed to colour change through a spectrum of bright colours, adding drama to the show. The awards were split into four categories; Personal Development; Academic Achievement; Sporting Achievement and Creative Arts with poignant live performances and films marking each element.
Kidsco Event Manager, Keir Thorogood commented; ‘Event Concept took on the challenge and delivered on the brief to help create a unique and inspiring event, which combined the creativity of Kids Company, with the grandeur of Banqueting House. From the initial planning stages to the final flight case being loaded back into the truck, Event Concept were a great team to work with, finding creative solutions and ensuring the children's achievements were always central to the event.'
Event Concept's AV Project Manager Jonny Stewart created two portrait projection screens fitted within the Main Hall window frames. Two sets of double-stacked Panasonic PT-DW 7700 projectors were hidden in the opposing window frames and covered by specially fitted curtains to ensure they didn't intrude into the space. Using Barco Screen Pro II, a portrait image was used to fill the screens with a background images while PowerPoint and video content was displayed to the screens within Picture in Picture window (PIP). A d&b Q7 p.a system was installed to relay the speeches and live music throughout the ceremony.
The Main Hall itself was decorated with an abundance of hanging delights which had been crafted by the Kidsco team and the kids themselves. The effect of the home-made decorations positioned in view of the Ruben's painted ceiling was stunning and helped to create a celebratory atmosphere for the awards ceremony.
Beese concluded; ‘It was a real pleasure working with such a worthwhile charity as Kids Company and we were happy to support them for this event and indeed with any future events. The Banqueting House has never looked as unique and stunning, the look on the kids' faces was truly heart-warming.'
