Making it in the Modern World

Science Museum to host new exhibition celebrating the best of modern British manufacturing during the Olympic Games

The award-winning Science Museum in South Kensington has been selected by the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) as the host venue for its exciting new exhibition, highlighting the best of modern British manufacturing.

Titled ‘Make it in Great Britain’, the exhibition will run from 24 July to 9 September 2012 in the Museum’s Level 1 blank-canvas gallery. Business Secretary Vince Cable and Business Minister Mark Prisk recently launched the Make it in Great Britain campaign with the backing of Captains of industry from world leading UK companies.

Aiming to dispel the myth that Britain ‘doesn’t make anything anymore’, Make it in Great Britain is all about changing the image of manufacturing – among investors and especially young people, too many of whom are missing out on great jobs and careers. The campaign will also feature a national competition, the Make it in Great Britain Challenge, which will identify innovative pre-market products or initiatives which will form part of next summer’s exhibition.

Sam Owen – Science Museum Head of Commercial Events, said: “The Science Museum is honoured to host this celebration of the best of British at a time when the eyes of the world are on us. There could be no greater synergy between the objectives of this campaign and our iconic collections including some the greatest inventions to shape our modern world, so we are delighted that our blank-canvas event space could be utilised for this incredible new exhibition.”
