London's Unique Venues Play their Part in Torch Relay
The Olympic Torch Relay passed many of Unique Venues of London’s (UVL) landmark venues during Sunday’s event, drawing significant attention to the stature, variation and character of some of the UVL’s most prestigious members.
Lisa Hatswell, Chairman of the UVL, Sales and New Business Manager, London Eye, comments on the impact the Torch Relay and the 2012 Olympic Games will have on London: “Many of our venues contribute to London’s unique character and the Games will undoubtedly highlight this. The Olympics will have an unprecedented impact on London as a business destination. I think demand for these distinct venues will only increase in the run up to, during and even after the Games.”
The torch bearer began by passing Kensington Palace before boarding a bus to one of London’s most impressive landmarks, the British Museum. From there the flame was then passed on to a runner who continued to pass both the London Transport Museum and the exquisite Banqueting House.
The runner then rounded Central Hall Westminster and Westminster Abbey before boarding a boat on the Thames. It then travelled up the river passing the London Eye and The Dali Universe at County Hall before landing on the Southbank opposite one of UVL’s newest members, National Theatre; from there, through a combination of London transport and Olympic runners, the Torch passed Somerset House, Middle Temple and St. Paul Cathedral.
The Torch’s route around the riverbank meant that it passed Southwark Cathedral, HMS Belfast and London Dungeon. Two of the capital’s most iconic bridges, Tower Bridge and the London Bridge, were used throughout the relay and it then continued to pass UVL members such as the Trinity House and the Museum in Dockland. The flame ended its journey in North Greenwich by passing the likes of the Cutty Sark and the Fan Museum and London’s most notable nautical venues the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Naval College.
