Sir John Soane's Museum

Enquire

‘The best kept secret in London’

Behind the unusual projecting facade of this Grade I listed building, lies London’s most unexpected interior, every aspect of which reflects its creator’s architectural ingenuity, imagination and love of beauty.

The Museum was designed by one of Britain's greatest architects, Sir John Soane (1753â€"1837) and was his home as well as his private Museum. It is a building of outstanding originality with its picturesque vistas and inventive handling of light and space. Soane’s collections – architectural fragments, Graecoâ€"Roman marbles, casts, paintings, sculpture and furniture – are combined with the architecture of the building, and are still arranged today as they were at the time of his death in 1837.

Preâ€"dinner drinks are served in the elegant double Drawing Room on the first floor, restored to its original 'patent Yellow' colour with yellow silk curtains and authentic carpet. An optional preâ€"dinner guided tour of the ground floor rooms can be given by a member of the curatorial staff. Dinner is served in the 19th century candlelit setting of the ground floor Library Dining Room where diners are surrounded by mirrors reflecting the Pompeian red decoration, the Greek vases and other works of art. This is perhaps the most remarkable and atmospheric Regency interior anywhere, where Sir John himself entertained Turner, Coleridge and the Duke of Sussex – the glitterati of the day.

Drinks receptions take place in the Library Dining Room. Guests may wander through the ground floor rooms of the Museum and visit the famous Picture Room with its two sets of paintings by William Hogarth, the Dome area and the Soane Gallery with its current exhibition.
