Event Operations and Venue Sales Executive - The British Library

We are a venue for events like nowhere else in the world and an exciting job opportunity has arisen within the Commercial Services Central Events Team.

The British Library is a Grade 1 listed building packed full of knowledge from around the world. It is home to many of the nation’s prized treasures, including works by some of the greatest minds in history – from Magna Carta and Shakespeare to Florence Nightingale and Ghandi.

Our Central Events Team strives to maximise revenue-generating opportunities for venue hire events and filming, engaging a wide range of corporate and private clients. Reporting into the Senior Events Manager, you will be responding to incoming enquiries and entering sales leads and bookings into our database, participating in the weekly Events meeting, administering contracts and invoices to ensure deposit and advance payments are received on time.

The role will involve co-ordinating venue site visits with clients and suppliers, liaising on the operational details of the planning process, creating detailed events sheets and managing on the day event logistics to ensure the smooth delivery of events. Solid experience of working with caterers is also a key element of the role as we have an on-site caterer who you will be working with for all catering requirements. In addition you will also support marketing activity including social media content.

The Central Events Team is key in delivering excellent standards of customer service to our clients, as well as to colleagues for our own British Library events programme, ensuring that health and safety processes are adhered to during events in order to protect the building and its collections.

The successful candidate will be highly organised with significant experience in the sales and operational delivery of events within a venue environment. A pro-active approach and high levels of attention to detail and interpersonal skills are essential for this role. The successful candidate will also have the ability to remain calm under pressure, be a creative problem solver and maintain a diplomatic approach to dealing with clients.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future and make it available to all for research, inspiration and enjoyment. At present we have well over 170 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We make our collections and programmes available to all. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future by anyone, anywhere.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes a minimum of 20.6% (this may be higher dependant on grade. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
