Head of Events and Venue Hire - Royal College of Music

The Royal College of Music (RCM) is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to the newly created role of Head of Events & Venue Hire.

When HRH The Prince of Wales founded the RCM in 1882 as part of the legacy of the Great Exhibition of 1851, he wanted it to be nothing less than the recognised centre of the musical world, encouraging, promoting and leading the cultivation of music on the international stage.

135 years on, the influence of the RCM on the development of music is incalculable and it

remains a natural first choice for talented students worldwide.  Generations of students have forged their careers and progressed to the very top of the profession as performers, composers, conductors, scholars and teachers. In the 2020 Complete University Guide league tables, the RCM was named as the top UK conservatoire for music and has also been ranked as the top institution for performing arts in the UK for four consecutive years in the QS World University Rankings (2016–19).

With 840 students from more than 60 countries, the RCM strives for the advancement of the Art of Music not only through providing musical instruction and awarding degrees, but by also promoting and supervising the teaching of music in schools and elsewhere, as well as encouraging the cultivation of music as an art form across the world. The RCM is also renowned for its programme of performances and events and houses a huge collection of musical instruments and music-related items and artefacts.

The RCM is looking to match its world-leading education with world-class facilities and seize the exciting opportunity to maximise commercial income streams when the More Music Building Redevelopment is completed in 2020, while remaining sensitive to its nature and primary function. The transformation of the South Kensington campus will enable students to benefit from new performance halls, extra rehearsal rooms and vibrant communal spaces.

Reporting to the Director of Development & Alumni Engagement, the post-holder will implement the strategy for events and venue hire, which will include marketing, sales and delivery of external venue hire and internal commercial event management. The Head of Events & Venue Hire will work to develop the use of RCM venues for general hire including conferences, workshops, corporate hires, filming and photography and develop reactive and proactive sales proposals to attract new and repeat business.

The position will require someone with significant experience of events and venue sales as well as management experience. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of effectively managing relationships with clients, agencies, partners and prospects to provide a first-class service. An appreciation of the arts and music, with a desire to immerse yourself in the work and culture of the RCM is essential.
