Antonia: Behind the Myth of Marie Antoinette at Chiswick House

September 2026

Antonia, an opera-play inspired by the musical life of Marie Antoinette, is taking place at Chiswick House on Saturday 3rd October at 3pm.

The production has been touring the U.K. and now returns to Chiswick House where it premiered earlier this year. The house, being a stunning neo-Palladian 18th century villa, is the perfect setting for an afternoon of 18th-century music presented in costume & wigs.

Marie Antoinette, trapped in a loveless marriage and bored with the rigid traditions of Versailles, throws her energy into music. Her schemes to manoeuvre her friends into stardom at the opera house and at court lead to scandal after scandal, until suddenly... the fun stops.

Olivia Doutney stars as the playful, witty and passionate Marie Antoinette and Petra Hajduchová plays harpsichord.

Alexander Armstrong described the production as: “Judiciously curated and stunningly performed.”
