St John's Gate is the historic home of the Order of St John and St John Ambulance, with a history stretching back to the 11th century. This is reflected in the Council Chamber's medieval-style interior designed by celebrated Victorian architect John Oldrid Scott, son of Sir George Gilbert Scott. In every direction you look you can find aesthetic flourishes from the Whitefriars stained glass to royal portraiture.

Built in 1504 as the gatehouse to English Priory of the Order, St John's Gate has seen many different uses over the centuries. After Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, it served as a private dwelling, coffee house, tavern and the headquarters of The Gentleman's Magazine, whose contributors included the famous Samuel Johnson.
