Beautiful Rooms - The Court Room, The Foundling Museum

Tuesday, August 10, 2021 - 09:30

The beautiful Court Room, completed in 1745, was the most splendid room in the Foundling Hospital. Designed to be the Governors’ meeting room, it was situated on the ground floor of the original building.

Considered today to be one of the city’s finest eighteenth-century Rococo interiors, it encapsulates the atmosphere and grandeur of mid-eighteenth-century London. Unchanged for hundreds of years, the Court Room makes a fabulous backdrop to any banquet or lavish drinks reception.

Renowned artists and craftsmen such as the plasterer William Wilton, the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack and the painter Thomas Gainsborough donated their work to embellish the room, all of which can still be viewed to this day.
