The MCR Restaurant and Bar was born out of a need for the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn's members to have a suitable space to meet, eat and unwind with colleagues and compatriots. Formerly known as the ‘Bar Common Room’, it was created in 1939 by building a mezzanine floor within the original Victorian kitchens of the Great Hall.
The architecture and detailed stonework which once formed the Great Hall kitchens in 1845, was sensitively restored to reveal intricate botanical patterns on our stunning vaulted ceiling as well as a variety of ornamental stone illustrations in the groining, designed by renowned architect Philip Hardwick.
The former chimney breast canopy from the great fireplace beneath now provides a focal point to the bar area.
After an extension and refurbishment in 2005 and the most recent extensive redesign and rebrand in September 2019, ‘The MCR’ remains primarily a restaurant and bar for our members and residents, but also provides a unique event venue for exclusive hire at weekends.
A contemporary space which retains its historic origins, complete with a private south facing terrace overlooking the Inn’s beautiful grounds, ‘The MCR’ is a stylish and versatile setting for receptions for up to 90 guests and small dinners for up to 50 guests.
