The building’s designer Sir Colin St John Wilson (1922-2007) was a naval lieutenant prior to the launch of his creative career. You can see this inspiration all around the building, from its overall shape to small details like circular windows, wooden doors and paneling.

The ship-like portholes throughout the Library open the space, creating stunning viewpoints for visitors to see the interior at its full height. Wilson described the experience: ‘As you move towards the circular opening of the porthole, it fits exactly with the cone of your vision. It’s a rather elegant way of discovering the view.’ Designed to create a welcoming ambiance, circular windows also allow the building to be flooded with natural light throughout the day, keeping our visitors connected to the outside world!

These features make the Library an ideal space for hosting events. Owing to its nautical inspiration, the building is full of quirky design features and seafaring clues for guests to delight in. You can also take part in guided tours of the building, in which guests can learn more about the British Library’s rich history – from its secret treasures hidden away in the basements, to its modern-day influences.
