Did you know? The Guildhall’s oldest event space dating back 2,000 years was discovered entirely serendipitously!

September 2024

During the course of building Guildhall’s Art Gallery an astounding discovery was made, and one that answered a centuries long question as to where London’s Roman Amphitheatre lay.  Following the initial discovery and subsequent excavation, the original Art Gallery plans were altered to integrate the remains into the new designs, and in 2002 the Roman Amphitheatre, now designated a scheduled monument, opened to the public.

A popular place of interest the Roman Amphitheatre is also available to hire for evening events.  Ideal for a reception or dinner this remarkable event space offers a wonderful backdrop to ensure a truly memorable experience for guests.

There aren’t many places where you can enjoy an evening event surrounded by 2,000 years’ worth of history!  Not only are parts of the walls still intact, but there are perfectly preserved examples of the wooden drainage system that built into the floor of the Amphitheatre.  Guests can marvel at not only the history they are surrounded by, but the incredible feat of engineering that is on display.  And all of this was discovered by pure chance!
