Home News Did you know? The home of the Royal Geographical Society was previously known as Lowther Lodge
August 2024
Before the building was home to the Royal Geographical Society, it was known as Lowther Lodge, built by William Lowther in the 1870s and home to the Lowther Family.

Lowther Lodge was designed by architect Norman Shaw. Today, the beautiful period building still contains features from the early Lowther Lodge.
A noticeable example is located in their grand Main Hall- one of their main spaces for hire at the venue. The Main Hall contains a beautiful ceramic tiled fireplace. The tiles were in fact hand-painted by Alice Lowther, wife of William Lowther, during the family’s residence in Lowther Lodge.

It is wonderful to have these touches of the building’s history in the Venue Hire spaces. Looking at photographs of the Main Hall from this time, it is fascinating how similar it looks today- perfect for those searching for a venue steeped in history and character!
