Southwark Cathedral 

Christmas is one of Southwark Cathedral’s busiest times of year. The Christmas atmosphere embellishes the Cathedral’s Gothic architecture. The magnificent arches of the Nave are illuminated by warm candlelight, twinkling lights are strung across corridors, Christmas trees are tucked in with the stunning high alter and in the Library. Creating an already amazing venue into a magical setting perfect for carol concerts and holiday receptions.  

The Cathedral’s Nave acoustics create the perfect setting for live musical performances and seasonal readings, with space for up to 600 or more seated guests to enjoy the performances. The Royal Institution

2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the CHRISTMAS LECTURES from the Royal Institution, which we have been celebrating throughout the year with our Discover200 campaign. This year, space scientist and BBC’s The Sky at Night presenter Maggie Aderin-Pocock will be presenting the lectures in the same Theatre in which they were started by Michael Faraday. 

Although the Theatre will be occupied throughout the month of December to build the set and rehearse for the lectures, you can still host your event in our historical venue throughout the year and be a part of the rich history of science engrained in the Ri. Our lecture theatre has been appearing on television for almost 90 years, and has heard the debut of some of the greatest scientific inventions and discoveries since the 19th century.
