As Christmas draws closer London becomes a hive of activity, our membership is offering four festive forays to celebrate the season…
No Londoner’s Christmas would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s many historic churches for a festive singsong. Amongst the membership, we’re spoilt for choice from the grandeur of St. Pauls, Southwark Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, as well as architectural gems including St. Martin’s-in-the-Field and Christchurch Spitalfields. All special and all hosting unique services. For those who are looking for something a little different and on a grand scale, Methodist Central Hall will also be hosting their annual carol service, complete with a gospel choir to lift the spirits.
Marvellous Markets and Fabulous Festivals
Christmas markets prove ever popular, drawing in crowds as people brave the chilly air to indulge in a little entertainment, a spot of street food and a good dose of retail-therapy. In December, The South Bank becomes a hive of activity with their familiar chalets, serving everything from hot chocolate, mulled wine, crafts and festive food. Not to be outdone, Tate Modern is also hosting a market full of curios and objet for the more artistic Christmas shoppers. It’s not all outdoors though, with Somerset House once again teaming up with Fortnum & Mason for the sophisticated Christmas Arcade.
Those seeing some cultural respite from the Christmas crush will not be disappointed. The Imperial War Museum is showcasing the ground-breaking photography of Lee Miller, whilst the National Portrait Gallery is staging a retrospective of the works of legendary sculptor Giacometti. Looking to the east for inspiration, the Royal Academy of Arts is hosting a special show of works from mega-star artist Ai WeiWei, a collection of his most impressive pieces from the last 20 years.
There’s nothing more refreshing than a brisk stroll on a chilly December day and plenty of inspiration for the perfect route abounds amongst our members. There’s green space in abundance in West London with a clutch of breathtaking walks through the grounds of Kew Gardens, Syon Park and Chiswick House and Gardens. Nature lovers also have something to celebrate, with ZSL London Zoo and the London Wetlands Centre offering a haven for those who want to add a little fauna to their flora.
