Lavender Green Flowers introduce new Fairtrade roses

Tuesday, February 11, 2020 - 11:45

Lavender Green Flowers are starting off the decade as they mean to go on – with the introduction of Fairtrade roses on offer at their store. Fairtrade is a simple and effective way to make a difference in the lives of the people who grow the things they love. Fairtrade has a mission to connect disadvantaged farmers and workers with consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower farmers and workers to combat poverty. The cut flower trade is a major industry and is becoming increasingly important in developing countries.

By choosing Fairtrade, Lavender Green are helping to protect and benefit workers on flower farms by working with certified farms to ensure decent working conditions for their employees and protecting workers’ rights. The florists have selected a variety of beautiful Fairtrade roses for their store, including; ‘All for Love’, ‘Mayra Flamingo’, ‘Hot Pink Mayra’ and ‘Red Hearts’ all sourced from Ecuador.

Ecuador’s location and the subsequent guaranteed 12 hours of sunlight a day has established the country as one of the most important flower-growing locations on the continent. Fairtrade flowers grow in naturally heated and lit greenhouses, and as a result, these flowers have a lighter carbon footprint on average than those grown under artificial heat and light in temperate countries, even when factoring in transport. Lavender Green Flowers feel strongly about focusing on sustainability and by incorporating Fairtrade flowers into their store, and are thus  making a significant step in the right direction.
