Seek advice…

Since the success of an event often hinges on the quality of the speaker, you should view independent advice about who to book as a necessity rather than a burden. Such guidance will help you to extract the most out of your (potentially significant) expenditure and, therefore, maximize your Return on Investment.

Define your aims, not the speaker…

Knowing what you hope to achieve from a speaker is vital – whether this is to motivate delegates to get behind a key company message, or to spark debate over thought-provoking content. Different speakers have different talents, and so a clear understanding of your own objectives will help you to select the one who can most effectively communicate your company’s message to the audience.

Universal awareness…

Take stock of audience demographics. Such criteria range from audience size, gender, age, job roles, and even seniority, as well as other nuanced factors such as attention span and energy levels. Having discussions early on about who your audience is will help to define how upbeat or reflective the speaker should be, and the type of speech he or she should deliver.

Context is king…

Don’t set out to revolve your event around the prestige of a speaker. Aim, instead, to book an individual who fits seamlessly into the flow of the occasion and is relevant to the wider context. It can be all too easy to become star-struck and lose sight of the main reason for having a speaker in the first place.  What is happening overall should always be a critical part of the type of speaker sourced.

Full disclosure…

Go into as much detail as possible. It’s not just about telling the speaker a time and expecting them to turn up. Bookers also need to consider whether the speaker is to socialise with the delegates, if there will be a Q&A session, and whether or not the session will be recorded. It sounds so simple but it’s easy to overlook even the most obvious factors. Providing a detailed brief will maximize value by revealing how to use your speaker to the best advantage in relation to your event.
