Unique By Design: The Natural History Museum

August 2025

Where else can you host your event under the graceful gaze of a dinosaur? As you emerge out of the rock canyon into the Evolution Garden, follow the immersive timeline telling the story of life on Earth over 540 million years and approach the Garden Kitchen – you are greeted by Fern, the Natural History Museum’s latest dino resident.

Fern is a bronze Diplodocus measuring over 20 metres long and 4 metres high, and a near-exact replica of the Museum’s beloved Dippy. Over the course of three years, Museum palaeontologist Prof Paul Barrett worked on the making of Fern with Factum Arte, and a team of engineers, artisans and 3D modellers.

Made up of 292 bones, Fern takes centre stage in a Jurassic oasis, filled with Wollemi pines, dwarf ginkgos and cycads – flora all chosen to evoke the feel of a landscape in the Jurassic Period and transport you back in time.

If you choose to host your event in the Garden Kitchen, the expansive windows and opportunity to spill outside into the Evolution Garden means guests immerse themselves in the urban nature oasis under the gaze of Fern all night long.
