Beneath one of London’s most iconic landmarks lies a piece of engineering history. The Engine Rooms at Tower Bridge were once the heart of the Bridge’s operation, where coal-fired steam engines – designed by pioneering engineer Sir William Armstrong – powered the massive bascules to lift for passing ships.

Nowadays the Bridge is powered by electricity (and has been since 1976), but guests can still visit The Engine Rooms and walk among the original Victorian machinery, seeing firsthand the engineering brilliance that made Tower Bridge a marvel of its time.
