White Light

Thursday, December 1, 2016 - 13:30

Last month, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard was presented with the Edmund Burke Award at the National Gallery in London. The Award is presented annually to someone who has made an outstanding champion of conservative values. Following its frequent work on a series of award ceremonies, White Light was approached to provide the technical support on this occasion.

ACRE, the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe, is the third largest European political party and features members from over 20 countries. The Edmund Burke Award is one of the most important dates in the organisation’s calendar. Richard Milsom of ACRE comments: “We were delighted to award John Howard, Australia’s former Prime Minister, with this year’s Edmund Burke award; particularly in such opulent settings. That said, we needed production support that would really make this an unforgettable occasion. As a result, we called on WL”.

WL is an approved supplier at the National Gallery and often works at the historic venue. Phil Gladman, WL’s Project Manager, comments: “This was a very prestigious invite-only dinner and we had to oversee all production aspects, including lighting, audio and staging. ACRE were very keen to work with an organisation that could provide all of the technical solutions they required and we were able to do this”.

The evening started with a drinks reception in the Central Hall, which guests entered via the Portico entrance. This was then followed by dinner in Room 30.

Along with the production support, WL also had to create the set and backdrop for the Award presentation. Phil comments: “We worked closely with our design team to create a very precise set that was not only suitable for the National Gallery space but also embodied the branding of ACRE”.

With any event taking place within a historic building, this often means working around the various elements within the Gallery space. As Room 30 is filled with valuable paintings, WL had to accommodate this by creating an intricate room layout prior to the event. On the evening itself, the company arrived at the building at 6pm and had 45 minutes to set up for a 6:45pm start.

Richard comments: “We were delighted with how the evening went. The Edmund Burke Award is one we are extremely proud to present each year and we are grateful to WL for providing such reliable and efficient support on the evening”.
