25 Years on: Sternberg Clarke shares how the event industry has changed

Thursday, July 26, 2018 - 10:15

Farewell fondue!

Event catering is almost unrecognisable today from a quarter of a century ago. One trend the Sternberg Clarke team isn't missing is Fondue, so popular in the 80s and 90s. For a while it resurfaced with the creation of the chocolate fountain but now has been replaced with a truly destination specific trend.  Locally sourced or authentically themed cuisine, local beers and wine and regional specialities are at the forefront of most event’s selections right now. We’ve also become more hospitable for varying dietary restrictions over the last 25 years - there’s now something for everyone.

No more pressing rewind...it's strictly digital

This seems incredible now but 25 years ago we were posting cassette tapes and videos to the clients!  The incredible invention of the internet has made the process a whole lot quicker and a whole lot easier. Today, it only takes less than a second to receive an email, meetings can be done via Skype regardless of physical distance and booking and purchasing can be done online by one click.

Technology is entertainment

Technology has seen a significant change in the last 25 years and this has a major effect on events.  Right now we’re seeing a huge rise in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) being used in experiential events and it's showing no signs of decreasing. A report from advertising technology research company, Nielsen, revealed that using VR and AR for brand events can increase customer attachment by as much as 27%.

Going mobile

Even more unimaginable now but mobile phones have revolutionised the world and how we connect to one and other. Aside from helping acts to let us know that they’ve broken down roadside without searching for a telephone box, mobiles now enable social networking, which is both a desired outcome and a pivotal consideration of so many events in 2018.

Venues are made for events

The biggest change relating to UVL is how much venues have transformed their working practices to enable events. While 25 years ago we were fledgling in using museums to host a party, it's now a joy to work with venue managers who are experienced and flexible in how to use unique spaces to their best advantage and really give guests an experience.
