A Royal Celebration

Wednesday, May 25, 2022 - 12:15

As London prepares itself to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, not only is there a wonderful array bunting and flowers adorning the city, but our member venues are also looking forward to marking this incredible achievement. You too can join them either by experiencing some of the celebratory activities they have for you to enjoy such as jousting at Hampton Court Palace or take in the wonderful natural beauty of Superbloom at the Tower of London, alternatively why not hold an event in the future at many more of our venues that have Royal connections and therefore making them the perfect locations to mark your own majestic occasion.

British Library

Royalty and researchers in one place? It can only be the British Library!

Our Grade I listed building at St Pancras was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998. But our royal connections go back further: at the heart of the building, a tall glass tower houses the private collection of King George III (1760–1820) who believed he should have a library worthy of an 18th-century monarch. The impressive King’s Library Tower – made of gleaming glass and bronze – was bequeathed to the nation in 1823, and spans the height of six storeys. Described as the jewel in the Library’s crown, it houses many rare books including a first edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and is often used as an awe-inspiring backdrop to spectacular evening events.

Host your next event in front of the majestic Kings Library Tower. Find out how at bl.uk/venue-hire or centraleventsteam@bl.uk

Foundling Museum

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge became Patron of the Foundling Museum in March 2019. The royal patronage was announced ahead of the Duchess’ visit to the Museum, when she learnt more about our pioneering programmes, particularly Tracing Our Tales - a training programme for care-experienced young adults - and creative projects with young psychiatric in-patients. The Museum brings its historic story of children in care to life in ways that are meaningful for young people today, by working with outstanding artists from all creative disciplines.

Conveniently located between King’s Cross St Pancras and Euston stations, the Foundling Museum is also a stylish venue in the heart of historic Bloomsbury, suitable for parties of all types. Whether you’re looking to celebrate a significant birthday, a corporate networking event or a festive get-together, our historic spaces make an inspirational backdrop, while telling the story of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and one of the country’s most progressive philanthropic institutions.

Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn

The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn is one of the Inns of court. Situated in the heart of the city, surrounded by beautiful legal London architecture dating back to the 1400s. The Great Hall is the largest event space within the Inns grounds, with its striking red brick exterior and impressive fresco artwork that graces the north wall. It’s eye-catching tall ceilings, complete with beautifully worked oak, is described as one of the most impressive surviving buildings of its kind in London and fitting backdrop for a number of celebrations.

The Great Hall was completed in 1845, the opening of the Hall came with an elaborately planned opening ceremony and grand dinner. The Inn extended an invitation to Her Majesty Queen Victoria as guest of honour at the opening ceremony. Queen Victoria recorded the particulars of her visit in her diary, describing the Great Hall as ‘a very fine building’. More recently in December 2018, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II reopened the Great Hall after a prolonged closure, along with opening the Inns newly built conference centre situated just below the Great Hall. Following in Queen Victoria’s footsteps by signing the Inn’s golden book.

The estate has a long and rich history, along with a prominent central London location, providing private hire for those wanting a compelling event space with an amazing history.

RCP London Events (The Royal College of Physicians)

Did you know the Royal College of Physicians boasts several interesting, unique royal connections?

As we approach the Platinum Jubilee we take a look at some of them, starting over 500 years ago in 1518 with the founding of the RCP by Royal Charter from King Henry VIII. This was followed in 1565 when Elizabeth I signed our charter for anatomies.

We’ve since had a long relationship of members being physicians in ordinary or extraordinary circumstances to the various kings and queens of England. Some examples for famous monarchs include:

Sir Theodore de Mayerne (1573 – 1654), the first physician to James I and Queen Anne, who knighted him. On the accession of Charles I, he was appointed first physician to the king and queen.

Sir Charles Scarburgh (1614-1693), a ‘sufferer for the royal cause’. During the English civil wars he went on to become the first physician to Charles II, by whom he was knighted in 1669.

Robert Ferguson (1799–1865), Queen Victoria’s obstetrician, who was present at the birth of all nine of Victoria’s children.

In more recent years we’ve enjoyed various Royal visits including in 1964 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened our building. She visited again for our 500th anniversary in 2018.

Royal Hospital Chelsea

Founders Day 2022

Founder's Day is the highlight of the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s calendar, an event attended by all Chelsea Pensioners, which celebrates the founding of the Royal Hospital by King Charles II.

The event has taken place almost every year since the Royal Hospital opened in 1692. Below, we celebrate the history of this very British ceremony. (Please note that general attendance is not possible and is strictly by invitation only.)

The Royal Hospital Chelsea’s Founder's Day, also known as Oak Apple Day, is always held on a date close to 29th May – the birthday of Charles II and the date of his restoration as King in 1660. In 2022, Founder's Day is due to take place on 9th June.

The Oak reference commemorates the escape of the future King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester (1651) when he hid in an oak tree to avoid capture by the Parliamentary forces, and is expressed through all Chelsea Pensioners wearing oak leaves on their famous scarlet uniforms (pictured below).

The gold statue of Charles II that stands in the centre of figure court is also adorned in oak leaves for the occasion. Over the years the statue oak leaf dressing has varied from a large wreath at the base to a wreath worn on the head, and from total covering where the statue is not even visible to a discreet skirt of oak branches around the base.

A member of the Royal Family attends the ceremony each year. Her Majesty the Queen has reviewed the parade four times.

Every year the official visitors book gets prepared with the Royal Coat of Arms ready for the member of the Royal Family to sign.

Tower of London

Superbloom at Tower of London

A visit to the Tower of London this summer will be even more special as we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee year of Her Majesty The Queen.

To mark the occasion, over 20 million seeds have been sown in the famous moat which will develop and morph over the course of the summer, culminating in the creation of a beautiful, new naturalistic landscape in the moat.

Designed to attract pollinators, ‘Superbloom’ will bring a wonderful natural beauty to the urban space and introduce a new biodiverse habitat for wildlife. It will celebrate the value of nature for our wellbeing.

Superbloom runs from June to September. As an evolving display, it's designed to offer visitors a changing experience depending on when they visit - moving from soft green hues in June to whites, blues, pinks and oranges throughout the height of summer and into September.
