From traditional churchyards to modern geometric landscapes, the capital is teeming with unique courtyards that act as amazing venues in their own right. Although Britain may not have the best reputation for good weather, when it does appear it is more than worth making the most of it by heading to an outdoor space. So whether you’re looking for a moment of inspiration in a tranquil corner or to host an event in a magnificent estate, consider choosing a courtyard venue that is anything but run-of-the-mill.
Somerset House
With its spectacular neo-classical surroundings, it’s easy to imagine a time when Kings, Queens and courtiers graced the grounds. Previously the site of a grand Tudor palace, the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House is now a hub for arts, music and cultural events. In summer, choreographed fountains provide endless fun for adults and children alike, whilst a wonderfully atmospheric ice rink takes centre stage in winter.
From press days, product launches, pop-ups and reception drinks, the courtyard at Somerset House makes a fantastically diverse setting for a number of events and occasions.

Victoria & Albert
Containing over 11,000 handmade porcelain tiles, the recently completed Sackler Courtyard at the Victoria & Albert museum is an impressive series of faceted planes inspired by the museum’s vast collection of ceramics. The smooth lines and clean surfaces juxtapose the Victorian architecture and directs attention up to the traditional detailing and decoration of the building. The bright and unique space, which is the world’s first porcelain courtyard, is a reflection of the museum’s mission to celebrate the marriage of arts and crafts with design and industry.
Designed to be a social area, the courtyard is also a beautiful blank canvas for exhibitions, performances and pop-up events.
