Monday, January 16, 2023 - 10:45

Unique Venues of London is delighted to welcome Mansion House to its collection of venues this year. The largest space in Mansion House, the Egyptian Hall can be utilised for numerous event formats including banquets, receptions, summits and recitals.

It has a standing capacity of up to five hundred guests, or three hundred and sixty guests for seated lunches and dinners. It is often utilised as the main plenary setting for conferences and exhibitions, and recently as a spectacular location for filming and fashions shows.

Despite its name the Hall has nothing Egyptian about its decoration, as it is actually based on designs by the classical Roman architect Vitruvius of Roman buildings in Egypt, with giant columns supporting a narrower attic area.

The Italian architect Andrea Palladio was much taken by this style in the 16th century and it was very fashionable in the 18th century, when the Mansion House was originally built. The marble statues date from 1854-64 and the stained glass from 1868.

The paintwork is close to the original stone colour, which, with the gilding, is intended to create a dignified effect appropriate to this great civic interior.
