Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and embellished by Robert Adam, the State Apartments are a hidden gem at the heart of Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Council Chamber is the larger of the two rooms, and one of the RHC Event Team’s favourite venue spaces. Full of history and grandeur, the wood panelled chamber has been used for State business and entertaining for hundreds of years, offering an intimate, sumptuous setting for guests.
This tradition is continued today, both by the Royal Hospital Chelsea and our clients. The Royal Hospital’s Board of Commissioners use the chamber for their quarterly meetings, and during the lockdown this space became a central hub for planning and strategy meetings.
The walls are adorned with striking portraits of Royal patrons and contributors to the Royal Hospital’s history, framing a magnificent Grinling Gibbons fireplace in the centre. Our resident tour guides (the Chelsea Pensioners) often come along to dinners and receptions to tell guests a little about the paintings and their subjects- there is always something new to learn!
Day or night, this space is truly exquisite and looks truly dazzling when dressed by our brilliant suppliers for civil ceremonies, fine dining and fabulous parties.
