In 1890 Sir Richard Wallace bequeathed his property to his widow Lady Wallace, who, on her death seven years later, left Hertford House and its contents, now known as the Wallace Collection, to the nation. Built between 1872 and 1875 as part of a grand extension before relocating an important part of the family’s collection from Paris to London, the Great Gallery was one of Sir Richard Wallace’s most notable additions to the house.
An imposing room with large, uninterrupted wall space and natural light, it was designed to display the finest paintings in the Collection alongside unsurpassable furniture and sculptures.

Masterpieces by Canaletto, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin, Velázquez and many of their greatest contemporaries adorn the walls, offering a unique panorama of seventeenth-century painting of the highest quality and making it a stunning filming location. The gallery offers a beautiful setting for engagement and post wedding ceremony photoshoots as well as non-legal Blessings as part of an evening Wedding Reception celebration.

The sumptuous silk lined walls look as breath taking as they did seven years ago following a £5 million pound refurbishment. So whether you are planning a corporate board dinner, meeting, milestone birthday or gala concert, the gallery is impressive, elegant and never fails to make a statement.

While the Great Gallery was under construction in the 1870s, much of the collection was exhibited at the Bethnal Green Museum in East London. The exhibition proved a sensation and over 2 million members of the public enjoyed viewing the Collection in its temporary home. Incorporating a Great Gallery reception into your evening offers your guests the opportunity to privately view this eclectic Collection in a spectacular setting.
