Extraordinary dining this summer immersed in the exhibition Made for the Table

This summer the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell has teamed up with food historian, Tasha Marks of AVM Curiosities, to craft extraordinary menus inspired by dining and the elegance of silverware throughout the centuries. Available for a limited time from 13 July to 31 August 2018, the evening starts with a multi award-winning Sipsmith cocktail and includes a curator talk whilst guests are immersed in the major touring exhibition Made for the Table, featuring the Goldsmiths’ Company’s world-renowned silver collection.

All fine dining menus have been adapted from the 700-year-old archives of Goldsmiths’ Hall and are inspired by the Goldsmiths’ Company’s collection of historic and contemporary silver. Guests will be able to pick from two delicious seasonal menus: a canapé reception menu, named “Textures of Silver”, inspired by the history and culture of cutlery. Guests will enjoy tantalising canapés, such as “I eat my peas with honey”, a Pea Pannacotta Cuillère Silver Honey and Cheese Macaroon, inspired by the dining etiquette of pushing your peas onto the fork tines with a knife. A polite convention perhaps, but wildly inconvenient, and conceivably the inspiration behind Ogden Nash’s 1944 poem: ‘I eat my peas with honey – I’ve done it all my life. It makes the peas taste funny but it keeps them on the knife.’

The fine dining menu “Taste of Silver” has been created based on historic menus, dating back to the 1890s, which were served at formal dinners laid with silver in the elegant Livery Hall at Goldsmiths’ Hall. This fine dining experience offers a rare opportunity to drink from a handcrafted silver beaker commissioned exclusively from the very best emerging British silversmiths. Silver beakers have been the centre point of our dining tables for centuries. Using the same ‘smithing’ techniques, 20 contemporary craftspeople have been commissioned to craft one-off beakers inspired by the theme ‘Old and New’. All beakers will be for sale post-exhibition via the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s website.

The “Textures of Silver” canapé reception menu is available for a minimum of 40 to a maximum of 100 guests. Packages start from £59 + VAT pp and includes 5 choice canapés and a cocktail.
