Room 32, more than just a number! Since January 2019, Room 32 at the National Gallery, has been empty of visitors and paintings but alive with restorers.
When its doors closed in January 2019, the room was in need of attention. The colourful decoration had been whitewashed during the 1920s and the room’s original fixtures and fittings had long been replaced. In January 2019, a major renovation programme began and the project had two goals: to reinstate Barry’s original decorative design and to modernise the out-of-date ventilation and lighting systems.
Now, in 2021 you can step inside Room 32: your very own Italian Palazzo. Surround guests with the iconic Baroque masterpieces, characterised by dynamic compositions, dramatic lighting and a vivid use of colour. This 17th Century artwork influenced the future of paintings across Europe, so it’s only fitting they hang in the most impactful room.
