Unique By Design: No.11 Cavendish Square

May 2026

No.11 Cavendish Square stands as one of Marylebone’s most architecturally significant addresses, with a heritage that mirrors London’s evolution over three centuries. Originally constructed in the early 1770s by George Foster Tufnell, MP, the Georgian townhouses at 11–14 Cavendish Square remain remarkably intact, showcasing the refined symmetry and Palladian elegance characteristic of the era.

The site’s story begins in the first quarter of the 18th century, when the Cavendish-Harley estate was conceived by Edward Harley, Earl of Oxford. London’s rapid growth westward at the time established Cavendish Square as the focal point of a bold new estate plan, setting the stage for an area defined by aristocratic vision and architectural ambition.

In 1889, No.11 was acquired by the Convent of the Holy Child of Jesus, marking the start of an 80 year chapter that introduced new architectural layers, including extensions added in the 1890s to support the convent’s educational mission. Despite sustaining damage during the Second World War, the building was meticulously restored under the direction of architect Louis Osman, who preserved its historic fabric while repairing wartime impact. Osman also commissioned the celebrated Madonna and Child sculpture by Jacob Epstein, installed above the archway in 1953, adding a distinctive artistic landmark to the site.

Today, No.11 Cavendish Square seamlessly blends its centuries old architectural heritage with contemporary purpose, serving as a modern events venue that continues to honour its extraordinary past.
