This year, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) proudly celebrates its 200th anniversary; a landmark moment honouring two centuries of pioneering science, global conservation impact and inspiring connections between people and wildlife. Founded in 1826 by visionary naturalists, ZSL has grown into a world‑leading force for wildlife protection, driving research, field conservation and public engagement across the globe.

To mark this extraordinary bicentenary, ZSL has launched a year‑long programme of events, tributes and innovations reflecting its rich heritage and bold future. Highlights include a £20 million investment in a new world‑leading wildlife health centre, the most significant donation in ZSL’s history, underscoring its commitment to tackling emerging threats to global biodiversity.

Celebrations also span culture and creativity: Poet Laureate Simon Armitage unveiled a new poem, The Moon and the Zoo, capturing the enduring bond between people and wildlife, while The Royal Mint released a commemorative £2 coin which roared into the spotlight thanks to its debut with ZSL’s Sumatran tigers.

Visitors to London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo can explore ZSL at 200 – The Exhibition, a major new showcase bringing the organisation’s remarkable history to life. The anniversary has also inspired a special Blue Peter episode, a new 12‑part podcast series hosted by Ben Fogle, and a striking London Underground poster featuring the Zoo’s iconic giraffes.
