The World City Gallery at the Museum of London documents the history of London from 1950 to the ‘present day’ and highlights how revolutions in technology, fashion and culture have transformed, and continue to transform, London.
This fascinating gallery explores several themes that reinforce the message that London’s identity is very much bound by the diversity of the people that live and work there. These include the emergence of youth counterculture; immigration and community cohesion; rights and legislation and the change in industry, work, and technology with the emergence of the City and decline of the Docks.
The World City Gallery is the perfect setting for drinks receptions, breakout sessions, and even dinners, as it acts as an organic conversation with guests able to relate directly to the objects on display whether having experienced them first-hand or from stories told by parents or grandparents. Objects to look out for include Tom Daley’s swimming trunks from the 2012 London Olympics which were designed by Stella McCartney, items of clothing from the 1960s and 1970s, Bill & Ben string puppets from the children’s television programme The Flowerpot Men, a 3D photographic model of two streets in Hackney and the iconic Vespa scooter.
