Stepping through the gates of the Charterhouse in Clerkenwell feels a bit like an experience in time travel and architectural evolution. What makes this venue so distinctive is that it doesn't belong to a single era; instead, it is a brilliant patchwork of transformation and survival spanning nearly seven centuries.

Established as a Carthusian monastery in 1371, architectural remnants of its medieval history can still be seen in the buildings today. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Tudor nobility reimagined the estate, reconfiguring the monastic buildings to create a grand mansion. Its crown jewels remain in the form of the Great Chamber, the Great Hall and the Norfolk Cloister. Work to repurpose the site into a school and an almshouse began in 1611, followed by Georgian and Victorian additions as well as post-war restoration work.

Today guests can dine beneath the soaring ceiling of the grand Tudor reception hall, follow in the footprints of medieval monks at a reception in the Norfolk Cloister, or take their wedding vows where Queen Elizabeth I held her first Privy Council in the elegant Great Chamber. 

The Charterhouse is not just a venue; they remain a home to their almshouse residents and have welcomed guests throughout their history.  At the Charterhouse, the architecture isn't a backdrop; it is a living legacy that lends undeniable soul, depth, and character to every event.
