The Design Museum’s hyperbolic paraboloid roof is a defining feature of the building’s architecture and a striking feature for events. Originally designed by RMJM for the Commonwealth Institute in 1962, the structure is an example of post-war modernism, with its distinctive curves formed by a tensioned steel and timber system. The roof’s shape creates an open, column-free interior, allowing for uninterrupted space beneath it.

Today, the Atrium sits directly under this structure, serving as a central space within the museum. The open-plan design, framed by exposed wood and natural light, allows for a sense of height and movement while maintaining a connection to the building’s original form.

The Atrium’s expansive layout and dramatic, triple-height space make it an ideal venue for events, from receptions and dinners to awards ceremonies and brand activations. The striking presence of the hyperbolic paraboloid roof provides a visually impressive setting that contributes to the museum’s role as a cultural landmark in Kensington.
