Sir John Soanes Museum

The uplifting power of architecture at Sir John Soane’s Museum

The life and career or Sir John Soane, who was born the son of a bricklayer and rose to fame as one of the foremost architects of the Regency era, are testament to the power of inspiration, learning and talent. His Museum, which remains as he left it at his death in 1837, reflects his faith in the uplifting nature of architecture. Spanning three floors the distinctive Dome Area at the heart of the Museum draws light from Soane’s iconic skylights right down into the basement in which sits the sarcophagus of the Egyptian pharaoh, Seti I. A cast of the celebrated statue of the Apollo Belvedere looks out onto the second floor.

Guests attending an event at the Soane, be it a private tour or a corporate drinks reception, cannot help but be inspired by Soane’s authentic genius and distinctive use of light and space.
