English National Ballet

The Mulryan Centre for Dance, home of English National Ballet, offers a wealth of creative spaces, including the Holloway Production Studio — a fantastic blank canvas space that is ideal for fashion shows. The space includes retractable bleacher seating for up to 175, a full-height fly tower, and, given its size and versatility, is suitable for a range of fashion show formats, accommodating up to 360 seated or 500 standing.

In September 2023, Simone Rocha presented her Spring/Summer 2024 Collection, Dress Rehearsal, in the Holloway Production Studio as part of London Fashion Week. The collection drew inspiration from wedding ceremonies, with elements like roses, cake-inspired tiers of appliqué, and tulle. The rehearsal studio setting was a fitting location given Rocha’s interest in dance, specifically ballet, and the "dress rehearsal" concept. Creating a feeling of intimacy was an important consideration for Rocha when selecting the venue, stating that she “wanted people to feel closer to the collection and the workmanship that’s gone into it.”

London Museum Docklands

London Museum Docklands offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s rich history, from the river, port, and people to its fashion evolution.

The wider museum holds one of the most significant fashion collections in the country, with around 26,000 objects from the 1500s to the present day with notable items at Docklands including a knitted vest by Wales Bonner as part of the Caribbean trail.

The current Secrets of the Thames exhibition explores themes like ‘Dressing London,’ showcasing objects such as shoe buckles, jewellery, a headdress, and a knitted hat discovered by mudlarks.

The Fashion City exhibition, part of the British Fashion Council’s celebration of 40 years of London Fashion Week, highlighted the contributions of Jewish designers, makers, and retailers to London’s fashion scene, while the museum also hosted a fashion show with Sagaboi, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush, featuring ocean-themed decorations that complemented the brand’s use of bold tropical colours.

If you would like to host an event at Docklands and explore its collections, email venuehire@londonmuseum.org.uk or call 0207 814 5789.

Southwark Cathedral

Southwark Cathedral’s breathtaking central Nave has been the host of several fashion shows. The Gothic architecture provides an unforgettable setting for collections to be showcased. The soaring arches, vaulted ceilings, and dramatic lighting of the Nave create a striking background for the show. The Nave’s designed with a long central aisle making it a natural runway. But creative chair setting can also take the runway through the arches, past ancient monuments and stained-glass windows.

Simone Rocha’s Spring/Summer show was held at the Cathedral during London Fashion Week in 2016. The gothic, ethereal aesthetic of the design flowed with the Cathedrals architecture, perfectly blending history and fashion.

The central location, various entrances and ample back of house space make it an ideal location for fashion shows. And the Cathedral’s stunning Nave prove that historic spaces can be the perfect backdrop for modern creativity.

Science Museum

Fashion fits in Illuminate

Illuminate at the Science Museum is a great fit for fashion shows, catwalks and photoshoots, due to its blank canvas nature, impressive size and light-filled spaces. Set over two floors, clients can be as creative as they want with the runway design with the panoramic views of the London skyline on Level 5 offering a standout backdrop, and Level 4 able to host the green room, changing area or after-show drinks.

In 2023, Illuminate hosted its first ever catwalk show for leading UK breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now. Illuminate was chosen by the organisers because it provided the ‘wow’ factor for guests, as well as being versatile enough to accommodate the main catwalk, a backstage area for a hair/make up station, quick-change and chillout area for models.

For the runway show, White Light worked with the client to design a bespoke floor-based catwalk solution on Level 5 using an array of battery-operated lighting equipment. This innovative approach placed guests right on the edge of the action, maximising the front row experience and creating an intimate environment for the models and audience.

Tomorrow’s Wardrobe at the Design Museum

The Design Museum is excited to be displaying Tomorrow’s Wardrobe, an exhibition which examines how the fashion industry is adapting to environmental challenges through innovative design and technology, on the Level 2 balcony until August 2025. The exhibition presents work from designers such as Stella McCartney, Ahluwalia, Salomon, Ranra, and Phoebe English, exploring alternative materials, new manufacturing processes, and approaches to sustainability.

The display follows the journey of fashion from material sourcing to production and consumption. It includes both traditional techniques and emerging technologies such as robotic arms, artificial intelligence, digital IDs, upcycling, and recycling. Research featured in the exhibition highlights the increasing scale of garment production, which has doubled since 2000 and is expected to grow by 60% by 2030. Tomorrow’s Wardrobe is curated by Future Observatory with input from UAL, Nike, and Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Design Museum’s building also has a connection to fashion history. In March 1984, the first London Fashion Week was held in the car park of the Commonwealth Institute, featuring designers including Vivienne Westwood, David Fielden, Ghost, and Betty Jackson.
